In the Salon of the Rue des Moulins

By: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Toulouse moved to Paris at seventeen, he eventually settled at the Moulin Rouge where he started working in posters. over his live time he did many work mostly of the ladies in the brothels. This piece is supposed to be 6 prostutes waiting for there clients. He used his imagination and studys he had done or makethis painting. The piece is oil on canvas it's 44 x 54 inches  so it is a relatively large painting.

I like the colors of the picture the dark purples and grays make the blues and whites of the dress pop. Ialso like the face that all of the women in the pictures look like real people they are not very idolized they look like they have wrinkles or are bigger women. it is very real looking and live like.

  1. This is so very different from the pieces he created for poster art. It just shows the versatility of style he has.

  2. I find it interesting that I only see 5 prostitutes, because the one woman who is fully clothed up to her neck doesn't seem like the kind of woman to be there. I feel that maybe she is the matron of the house, the one who houses all the women. The atmosphere feels as if they are all bored, kind of waiting for the guys to show up so they can get the night over with and get paid.

  3. I am a fan of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's poster art. I have only look up a few from this class and from Print Production. I didn't know that he did other works and styles. This painting is interesting. When I think of the Moulin Rouge I think of bright colors, dancing, music, excitement. This comes from thinking back to his Moulin Rouge poster. Then here it is the exact opposite. He gives you a behind the look at the reality of it all. Even though the technique for this painting and his posters are different, you can still tell that they are his works.

A link to the Moulin Rouge poster I was referring to: http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/works-of-art/32.88.12

  4. I was reading about this art piece and found out that is not the brothel of Rue des Moulins, but the one in the Rue d'Amboise.

  5. It is said that this artist is a "gingerphile", he favors women with red, strawberry blonde, and orange hair, even in this piece you can see the women either have orangish to read hair also he had a favorite prostitute that he used in a lot of his pieces. I think she is the one in the back with red and black on in profile her name is Rolande.
